MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) is the main component of PubMed, a database from the National Library of Medicine covering biomedical journal articles. It contains 20 million citations from the medical literature from 1946 to the present.
MedlinePlus is a free online service of the National Library of Medicine. It provides curated consumer health information in English and Spanish and links to scholarly articles in the NIH-funded PubMed database. In addition, it contains a medical dictionary and an illustrated medical encyclopedia, and offers interactive tutorials, videos and tools.
The site also features recipes that include fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy and healthy oils. Each recipe also includes a Nutrition Facts label. The website also offers a list of dietary supplements and drugs that may be helpful in treating specific diseases or conditions.
The site also provides descriptions of nearly 300 medical tests that doctors use to diagnose and guide treatment for a variety of illnesses, including symptoms, how the test is performed, what to expect during the procedure, and how to prevent complications. It also provides information on genetic conditions and ongoing research.
PubMed is a free, web-based service that provides access to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) literature resources. It includes MEDLINE, PubMed Central, and Bookshelf. PubMed contains millions of citations to biomedical journals from around the world. It indexes journal articles in the areas of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care systems, and preclinical sciences. PubMed also includes a number of other NLM resources such as meeting abstracts, conference proceedings, patents, and websites.
NLM has sought user feedback to help shape the development of PubMed and related products, including MedlinePlus. This has included efforts to improve clarity about what each resource contains; for instance, the addition of out-of-scope records that indicate a journal article is not within the scope of MEDLINE (for example, articles discussing topics like geology or physics). NLM has also worked to make it easier for users to access licensed full text information resources, such as current health news from Reuters and Associated Press and the A.D.A.M. Illustrated Medical Dictionary from Merriam-Webster.
