MINTS Investments is a new investment firm based out of the University of Michigan. They have a team of experts in a variety of fields including finance, economics, law, and engineering. MINTS, or the Michigan Investment in New Technology Startups, is a University of Michigan fund that invests in early-stage companies that are in the business of using University of Michigan technology. The Michigan investment office oversees MINTS, and it has invested over $24 million in a few dozen companies so far. The program is aimed at helping University of Michigan researchers commercialize their work and generating a sizable return on its endowment.
The MINTS program has also been the beneficiary of some savvy marketing by University of Michigan President Emeritus Mary Sue Coleman. Coleman said in early October that U-M lost out on a lot of investment return by not investing in its own startups earlier. The MINTS program is an initiative that has been in operation since December 2011.
The MINTS program is responsible for commercializing University of Michigan technology. In its first 11 years of operation, the Office of Technology Transfer has launched 104 startups. In fiscal 2009, the Office of Technology Transfer facilitated eight startup companies. In fiscal 2010, it facilitated 10 startup companies.
Founded by two entrepreneurs, Chris Larsen and Jed McCaleb, Ripple Labs entered the digital currency market under the name Opencoin in September 2012. They recruited David Schwartz, an economist, as a partner. He helped develop the consensus network that eventually became Ripple's payment protocol.
