Electronic filing (eFiling) is a way for you to send your documents to the court electronically from your computer, tablet or smartphone. It's easy, fast and FREE!
To file your documents online, you need to prepare them in the correct format. Check your court's website or state's legal aid site for more information.
EFiling is the process of electronically filing court papers with the court instead of handing them to a clerk in person. It is a free, voluntary service offered by most courts.
Attorneys and other parties can file papers using a computer or mobile device. This can save you time and money by reducing the need to travel to the courthouse.
It also reduces errors by eliminating the need to re-enter the information in the system. It can also save paper since the system will automatically scan and retain documents that are e-Filed for future use.
If you are an attorney, eFiling is mandatory in counties that have been converted to the new MDEC system (see Rule 20-106). Self-represented litigants can voluntarily choose to e-file or can ask for an exemption from the requirement by completing an E-Filing Exemption Certificate and submitting it along with their other court papers.
If you have questions about eFiling, contact the court or your electronic filing service provider for help. Each electronic service provider offers different levels of eFiling support.

To eFile your documents, you must have a valid EFILE number and password. If you have lost your EFILE number or password, contact the EFILE Helpdesk to obtain a new one.
Documents must be uploaded in searchable Portable Document Format (PDF). Scanned PDFs can be made searchable by using optical character recognition software that is available for free from some office copier/scanner manufacturers.
Several fillable forms are available from the Judicial Council of California. Be sure to inactivate fields on these forms that are no longer fillable before submitting them for eFiling. This will ensure that your documents can be submitted to the court electronically. The majority of cases can be filed electronically, although the size of individual documents and transactions may exceed the file limits set by your electronic filing service provider.
