Ku 24 is a project that explores the interaction of real and virtual space. It takes the blueprints and structural plans for a technotopian future city that will never be completed, and moves them into cyberspace.
This is done by creating accurate virtual representations of the participating physical spaces. Then hypermedia objects that belong to the participating locations are placed within these virtual representations using Matisse technology.
Ku 24 aims to be a hybrid virtual/real environment. It will offer a range of social interaction options which are easily extensible by the addition of downloadable extensions. The system will also make it possible to create a number of specialized environments within the reality server. The focus of the system will be on social interaction.
Characters in ku24 will be based on real people with real lives. Their roles and interactions will be developed by a team of designers and developers. Their personalities are intended to be recognizable to all users of the system.
The main characters of the system are Shuta, Ran and Koki. They are all related and work at the popular okonomiyaki restaurant in the 24th ward. They have a puppy named Daisy. They have been friends for many years. They are a bit awkward and can be moody at times but are generally very friendly and bright. They are very good at computer games.
Ku 24 is a concept for a socially interactive hybrid reality of virtual and real spaces. The physical space of participating real locations are represented accurately within the virtual world, utilizing Matisse technology, and hypermedia objects appropriate to these locations are positioned within these representations. These hybrid environments provide a highly interactive and enriched environment which encourages complex physical and electronically-mediated interactions between the "residents" of the virtual spaces and their distributed data objects. These augmented realities are intended to form the foundation for a number of distributed hypermedia projects which will involve Tokyo and its surroundings.
