Tomatometer - What Do Other People Think of a Movie?

Ratings

Film and TV critics from across the country are invited to submit their Tomatometer scores for movies and shows. A red tomato (indicating “fresh”) is displayed when at least 60% of reviews are positive, while a green splat (“rotten”) is shown for those with less than 60%. A movie or show’s Tomatometer score will appear in the “Movie Details” section when you click on the title.

Ratings can also be determined by everyday moviegoers, called “Verified Ratings.” These are calculated by looking at the number of people who have rated the title, as well as the percentage of those ratings that are positive. These numbers are then compared with the critics’ Tomatometer scores to indicate if a movie is a must-see or maybe pass on.

KUNR movie reviewer Robin Holabird uses both the Tomatometer and Verified Ratings on all of her reviews. You can hear her commentary Fridays on KUNR’s Fresh Air, between 2:37 and 2:47 p.m.

If you want to know what other people think about a movie, there are many sites that allow you to view reviews written by professional critics and amateur users. The most famous of these is Rotten Tomatoes, which uses a "tomato" meter that shows how fresh (green) or rotten (red) the movie is.

Another popular site is MetaCritic, which compiles reviews from several sources and displays them in a single location. Both of these sites allow you to filter movies by publication date and user score, and to see lists of top rated films by critics and by MetaCritic users.
