To better understand the relationship between linguistic input and children’s use of the 3rd person singular -s (3S) inflection, we tested 16 young children in four presentation conditions. Each condition presented a novel verb in either a 3S context or a nonfinite (NF) context.
One of the predictions was that children would show less use of the 3S inflection with familiar verbs than with newly encountered novel verbs. This prediction was based on the assumption that familiar verbs heard in daily circumstances in a variety of contexts would be more likely to be used in grammatical ways that are not limited by inflection.
