Citizen's users have been responsible for finding a missing 76-year-old man in New York, alerting someone to an apartment fire and helping a person avoid a nearby armed robbery. But some researchers fear the app is extending surveillance into residential space.

It's not uncommon for tech startups to churn through ideas and have high turnover in senior management, but Citizen has experienced a particularly extreme revolving door since 2020.

Become a Citizen Scientist

Citizensl is a global community of people who help make science happen. Citizen scientists partner with professional scientists to collect valuable data that solves complex problems and makes real impacts in a variety of fields.

Some projects are easy to do from your home or on a hike with the family, while others require specialized equipment and training. The most important thing is that you participate for the love of science and to help make a difference!

Other projects are more involved and involve meeting regularly with the research team. Depending on the project, this may include reviewing recruitment materials; helping to write or edit publications describing research findings; or participating more extensively as a member of the study team, workgroup or committee. The latter often requires a significant time commitment.

Whether it's helping scientists mark craters, classifying tree squirrels or accelerating Alzheimer's research by playing an online game, citizens can participate in real science through SciStarter. This internationally acclaimed hub makes thousands of vetted projects (searchable by location, topic, age level and other attributes) more accessible and usable to non-experts.

Projects submitted to SciStarter address questions a scientist or concerned/curious citizen can't answer alone and may educate participants as a byproduct of their engagement. Projects, programs and events can scale to all ages but due to legal considerations of data quality and online safety, are generally targeted at 13 years and older.

SciStarter connects with libraries, schools, museums, Girl Scouts, 55+ organizations and community volunteer programs to catalyze customized engagement pathways and track participants' participation and contributions through a shared hub. Participate in a Citizen Science Project

Many scientific research projects rely on the public to collect data. Snapping mountain-top photos of smog, listening for frog calls or tracking birds in an urban neighborhood are just some of the ways you can help. You’ll join a worldwide community of citizen scientists who are contributing to real science. These contributions advance research in fields as diverse as ecology, astronomy and medicine.

But not all citizen-science efforts are created equal. Some require significant training and time commitments, but others are akin to online surveys and only require that you fill in a form with your observations. A study examining the factors that influence participation in large-scale citizen science projects found that participants were not motivated by opportunities to develop their career or social interaction with other contributors. However, other studies have shown that positive feedback and trust are key to motivating citizens (Tiago et al., 2017). Providing more training opportunities for scientists involved in citizen science projects may also increase motivation and help ensure that the scientific goals of these projects are met.

Become a United States citizen through the naturalization process if you have met certain requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act. You may also be eligible to sponsor your family for citizenship through the naturalization process.

Obtaining US citizenship enables you to vote, gain access to Federal jobs, scholarships and benefits reserved only for citizens, serve on a jury, run for public office, or bring your family to the United States as a legal permanent resident. Citizenship also entitles you to travel without restriction to most countries in the world.
